OPPORTUNITIES
Furniture Masters Auction - September 20, 2009
Location:
Currier Museum of Art, in Manchester, NH
Have you ever wanted to shadow a craftsman through the process of building a piece? What if you could participate up close in the inner conversations that go on between patron and artist as they determine nuances of design and proportion? Consider now what it would be like to be the patron - sharing ideas, visions of a piece that will one day stand prominently in your home. If you're still reading, then you're drawn to this kind of experience, and perhaps curious to know more.

For the last decade, every January Tom begins pondering what kind of piece he will build to exhibit at the New Hampshire Furniture Masters annual auction. This group of 30 or so artist-craftsmen will hold their 13th annual event in September 2009. This year Tom is working on for this year is an easy chair, elegantly combining woodwork and upholstery.

Participating in the auction process up close is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who loves wood, art, and might enjoy the collaborating over a custom piece of furniture with a career craftsman. Anyone interested in seeing the sketches Tom has worked up for this year's piece, or would like to discuss this process further with him may contact him by e-mail or by phone: 603-783-9700.

RECENT WORK
Rhapsody in Red

Rhapsody in Red
Inspiration can come from the most unexpected and sometimes distant places. Some years ago while in Indonesia, Tom was struck by the simple yet stunning beauty of the terraced gardens dug into the hilly countryside. He supposes those deep visual impressions were stored away somewhere to surface at just the right moment - in the design of this piece. The upswept curves of the ebonized legs converge into the shadowy classical column, appearing to rise up and explode through the top, cascading like fireworks streamers into glittering Art Deco-like fields of rare red Amboyna burl.

Materials: Ebonized Honduran mahogany, Macassar ebony, red Amboyna burl, nickel-plated cast brass feet. Dimensions: 17-3/4" deep x 37-3/4" wide x 29-1/2" high. Handcrafted by Tom McLaughlin, with apprentice Levi Lucks. Carving by Clive Hamilton of Worcester, MA.

Subtle and sweeping curves are beautifully complemented by extraordinary figured makore, bordered with ribbon-cut Cuban mahogany. The locally harvested crotch birch star inlay lends a regional signature.

Materials: Figured crotch makore, figured New Hampshire-grown crotch yellow birch, figured crotch walnut, Cuban and Honduran mahogany, ebony. Dimensions: 38" diameter x 28" high. Handcrafted by Tom McLaughlin, with apprentice Levi Lucks.
