“I can't believe I get to do this every day. I love being in the shop, breathing the spicy aromas of freshly sawn wood, absorbed in the process and filled with anticipation as raw material is shaped into useful form.”

It always amazes me when people are intrigued by what I do for work.

There's something romantic in their perception of what it must be like be in the shop all day - making something with my hands. I know there is some truth to that, but for me it's much, much more.

Building furniture has taught me a lot of patience. It's taught me to appreciate the elements I work with: the unpredictability of wood, the artistry of fine proportions, and the variances in finishing techniques. I have learned to work with the materials. They remind me frankly of what is truly out of my hands, and yet, what I can honestly hope to influence.

It is very humbling to be presented the task of creating a piece of furniture for someone. This is especially true when your intention is to build a piece with the quality and integrity that will likely survive the generation you live in, and beyond.

It's a privilege to do what I do for work. No one ever made it rich building custom furniture, not in the monetary sense, but there are many riches uncovered when we answer what is our calling. "I could do nothing else," I tell my wife on those days when we have wondered about the ruts and bumps in the road of self-employment in custom furniture making. I am blessed to do what I love to do. And we are grateful.

You can read the story of our journey to this point on the Our Story and In the Media pages. Or if you're curious what's involved in ordering a piece of furniture - start to finish - read about it on The Process page. Or there is an online Portfolio where you can view a collection of McLaughlin Woods pieces built over the years. Finally, there is a page of Testimonials from past clients who were kind enough to share their experience with us.

If at any time you have a question about a particular piece, or something you have in mind for your own home, feel free to call or e-mail us. I look forward to the possibility of working with you on a special, unique heirloom piece for you and your family.

Sincerely,

      Tom McLaughlin
