The Craftsmen

Tom McLaughlin
Tom learned to appreciate the fine arts aspect of woodworking in his teens, but an apprenticeship with 73-year old P.A. "Pug" Moore launched his 17 years of making furniture professionally. Tom's emphasis on combining exceptional materials with traditionally inspired designs has led to his work being acquired by notable museums. Tom has been featured in Traditional Home magazine, The New York Times, and Fine Woodworking magazine, and has received several design awards from the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen.

For the past 8 years Tom has been teaching furniture making classes. In late 2006 Tom accepted the invitation to be the Chairman of the New Hampshire Furniture Masters, an honor that grealy humbles him. In addition, for the past 3-4 years he has coordinated the Furniture Masters Prison program, through which inmates receive individual and workshop training as a rehabilitation effort. Levi Lucks
Levi came to a class in August of 2005. Quiet and focused, his natural abilities, future potential, and work style caught our eye. The fact that he was on a similar journey that the McLaughlins had taken many years ago -- to find a place to learn the craft of fine woodworking -- was equally catching. Levi had chosen a couple woodworking schools in the Northeast, and at the young age of 20, on his own, driven from Michigan to take classes at these places -- one of which was of McLaughlin Woods. There was something impressive to us in his determination to chase his dream. By December, with a business arrangement in place, his family's support behind him, and an apartment procured, Levi arrived in Canterbury to join Tom in the shop.

It is hard to believe so many months have passed beyond those early days. Levi has been here now for over a year. We are so grateful to God for sending him to us. His abilities and work ethic are an incredible asset to our business, while his character has marked our lives.
